SECU Celebrates 85 Years


SECU has come a long way since 1937. As we’ve expanded over the years, one thing has never wavered: meeting our members where they are.

While 85 years is a big milestone, it’s only the beginning. We’re so excited to continue growing alongside our members.

1937

June 4, 1937: State Employees’ Credit Union was chartered with 17 members and $437 in assets. It was operated on a part-time basis out of the basement of the Agriculture Building in Raleigh.

1943

The State legislature authorized the Credit Union to offer checking accounts.

1951

State Employees’ Credit Union began offering mortgage loans.

1982

The first CashPoints® ATM became operational.

1985

State Employees’ Credit Union obtained federal insurance protection through the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

1990

The Credit Union introduced ASK SECU Voice Response System for access to account information 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

1996

The Credit Union began the Call Center.

1999

The Credit Union website was introduced - SECU Online at www.ncsecu.org.

2000

SECU launched the FAT CAT® youth account program.

2004

The SECU Foundation was established, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization funded by the contributions of SECU members.

2007

Introduced Investment Advisory Services and formed a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Credit Union Investment Services (CUIS).

2008

Launched Mobile Access to allow members to connect to account information from web enabled cell phones and other mobile devices.

2013

SECU Life Insurance Company was formed. SECU Life Insurance Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SECU and a North Carolina licensed service organization.


Announced the formation of SECU*Real Estate (SECU*RE), a wholly-owned property management subsidiary.

2016

Launched Mobile Payments service with Apple PayTM, Samsung PayTM and Android PayTM options, as well as Visa® Checkout for SECU debit and credit cardholders.

2019

Launched the SECU Mobile App, providing a secure, convenient method for members to view account information and conduct financial transactions using smartphones or mobile devices.

2020

Launched the much-anticipated Mobile Check Deposit feature of the SECU Mobile App.

2022

Celebrated the 85th Anniversary of SECU with $53 billion in assets and serving over 2.6 million members through 274 branch locations, more than 1,100 ATMs, 24/7 Member Services via phone, an interactive website, and a Mobile App.
